FAQs & Fees
When Is a Referral Needed, From Who & What's Included?
You can self-refer and see Kerry as a private client, either paying in full yourself, utilising a private health fund (depending on your level of cover) or NDIS funding (for self-managed clients), and subsequently would not need a GP/medical specialist referral to book an appointment.
NB: Referral forms for public and private sector organisations/health professionals can be emailed upon request.
In order to receive Medicare Rebates for psychology sessions in Australia (e.g., reimbursed via the Medicare Better Access to Mental Health Scheme), you will however need to have a Medicare card and obtain a referral including a Mental Health Treatment Plan (typically from your usual GP during a longer appointment or Prescribed Medical Practitioner at the practice which you are enrolled in MyMedicare with). Referrals can also come from a psychiatrist or paediatrician. NB: Your “usual GP” is one who has provided the majority of your care over the previous 12 months or will be providing the majority of your care over the next 12 months (this includes a medical practitioner who is located at a medical practice that has provided the majority of your care over the previous 12 months or will be providing the majority of your care over the next 12 months).
Rebates cannot be backdated for sessions that have been completed prior to the date of the referral; please ensure you (or your GP) provide your referral (and typically a Mental Health Treatment Plan too) before your first session.
Please Send Referrals & Plans To:
F: 08 6149 0654
E: Admin@still-i-rise-psychology.com
NB: This email is encrypted (using TLS).
Alternatively, referrals and plans can be easily and securely attached as a file to your digital intake form (a link will be sent to your email prior to your first appointment).
A referral (distinct from a treatment plan) should include:
- The date of the referral and a statement about whether you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan or a psychiatrist assessment and management plan.
- Client’s name, date of birth and address.
- Diagnosis/symptoms or concerns (and any current medications).
- The referring practitioner’s name, Medicare Provider number and signature (Medicare accepts electronic referrals and signatures e.g., email).
- The number of treatment sessions being referred for (initial and subsequent “courses of treatment” are for a maximum of 6 sessions and a total of 10 rebated individual therapy sessions can be undertaken per calendar year).
NB: With your agreement, your GP can provide a copy of your Mental Health Treatment Plan along with your referral. Mental Health Treatment Plans do not expire at the end of the calendar year and a referral is valid for the referred number of sessions – if you have unused services, you can continue to use them in the following year, regardless of whether you choose to change your mental health provider (they will however count towards your total eligible sessions for that year).
What is a Clinical Psychologist?
Clinical Psychologists are scientist-practitioners, utilising evidence-based practice and psychological therapies (as opposed to medication) to support clients and communities in preventing, understanding and treating (mild to moderate, severe, chronic and/or complex) mental health concerns.
“Clinical psychologists use their knowledge of psychology and mental health for the assessment, diagnosis, formulation, treatment, and prevention of psychological problems and mental illness across the lifespan.” (AHPRA, 2024).
Clinical Psychologists are recognised under National Law and the Psychology Board of Australia as Clinically Endorsed (specialised) Psychologists, having typically completed 8 years of tertiary education and training including accredited post-graduate training with advanced supervised practice to receive an Area of Practice Endorsement. The Australian Clinical Psychology Association (2024) note: “We know of no other health professional who undertakes this length and level of accredited training in psychological practice in mental health.”
Fees & Medicare Rebates
Charges in excess of the Medicare benefit (gap payments) are the responsibility of the client. However, these out-of-pocket costs will count towards your/your families’ Medicare safety net. NB: Clients who have reached the Medicare safety net threshold will receive higher Medicare rebates than those listed below. The Express Plus Medicare App can be used to check the safety net threshold.
Standard Appointment (min. 50 minute initial or subsequent telehealth/video consultation), full fee/no Medicare rebate: $235.25.
Standard Appointment (min. 50 minute initial or subsequent telehealth/video consultation) with (Better Access initiative) referral & Medicare rebate ($145.25): Gap fee of $90 or $70 with concession.
NB: The Australian Psychological Society “National Schedule of Suggested Fees” (1/7/25-30/6/26) has the standard 46 to 60 minute appointment fee at $318 and appointments extending to 76-90 minutes at $462 (these recommendations include initial, subsequent and telephone consultations).
Mobile Outreach/Walk & Talk Therapy (min. 50 minute in-person consultation), full fee/no Medicare rebate: $264.95.
Mobile Outreach/Walk & Talk Therapy (min. 50 minute in-person consultation), with (Better Access initiative) referral & Medicare rebate ($169.95): Gap fee of $95 or $75 with concession. NB: These sessions are on a therapeutic-needs basis/for eligible pre-existing telehealth clients.
NB: Fees are current (1/7/25-30/6/26) and a wide-range of services are offered at varying rates additional to those listed above (including for third-party payment arrangements under DCP’s fee schedule & Corporate agreements).
Discounted rates are available for clients/guardians with a current concession card, full-time tertiary students and existing clients with genuine financial hardship.
Clients with an NDIS plan (self-managed) are typically charged rates in-line with the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits guide (NB: a service agreement is agreed upon in-line with the provided NDIS plan).
While therapy sessions typically run for a minimum of 50-60 minutes, some may require additional time (such as for initial/intake & EMDR sessions which often run for 90 minutes); regardless, your scheduled appointment fee remains the same. There are also no additional travel fees.
Private Health Insurance
Some private health insurance companies (e.g., Bupa & ahm) may assist you in paying for psychology sessions via telehealth, but this depends on your insurer and the level of cover you have. Contact your private health insurance provider directly to discuss this (and note that Kerry is a registered provider for most major health insurance companies e.g. Bupa, Medibank and ahm).
NB: You cannot claim both Medicare rebates and use your private health insurance (or other forms of compensation) to pay for any psychological services you receive. You will need to choose which one you prefer to use.
Payment is due in full at the time of the service and an invoice will be generated for you to provide to your health insurance company for reimbursement.
NB: Health insurance companies may request additional details (e.g. diagnoses); however no information will be provided without your consent.
What Are My Payment Options?
Still I Rise Psychology offers online Medicare processing enabling quicker rebates, without the hassle of going into a Medicare office. Medicare rebates can be processed immediately following sessions and will typically be reimbursed within 24 hours or less.
Along with BPAY and PayID, payments can be securely and simply processed electronically; a service powered by Braintree in Australia (a subsidiary of PayPal), protected by bank-grade encryption. With this convenient payment option, when your card details are entered (on just one occasion), they are stored (and tokenised) and are not visible to anybody within the practice or practice management software.
To add protection to processed payments, an “authorised limit” is set, preventing unusual transaction amounts from being wrongly processed. For any payments higher than that amount, you would receive a verification SMS, giving you the option to accept or reject the charge. Alternatively, you can request payment confirmation via SMS on all occasions, regardless of the requested payment amount.
Payments are required to be made in full at the conclusion of each consultation (with the exception of clients with individualised third-party service agreements).
Cancellations
Still I Rise Psychology has a cancellation fee policy (provided with your intake form and terms of service), believing that just as your time is valuable, the time your psychologist spends preparing for your session and sets aside especially for you, is also valuable. Sufficient notice of non-attendance provides the opportunity for others to take advantage of available appointment times and psychologists must spend time reviewing clients’ files, session-planning, note-taking, etc. irrespective of whether or not scheduled appointments are attended.
With the exception of clients funded through the Department for Child Protection and supervisees with individualised service agreements, for cancellations/non-attendance (including for the purpose of rescheduling) with 2 business days notice or less, a $100 fee may be charged. NB: This will not occur at times the cancelled appointment is immediately able to be filled. Medicare rebates are not available in this instance and many private practices charge the full fee under such a circumstance.
Each client has one cancellation fee waiver per annum that they can choose to use; clients can let their psychologist/Still I Rise Psychology know when they would like to use this annual waiver.

Your Sessions Your Way
Telehealth & convenience are synonymous, whether you’re pregnant, home with a child, on a lunchbreak from work, in between assignments or wanting support during an anxiety-provoking outing.
Walk & Talk Therapy
A hybrid model of both telehealth & in-person therapy via outreach is offered to clients who can benefit from such a supportive therapeutic approach – away from the limitations of the therapy couch! Pre-existing clients typically residing in the Eastern, North-Eastern & Northern areas of Adelaide may be supported via outreach. Learn more below.
Technology, Security & Client Requirements
- Telehealth or video conferencing with Still I Rise Psychology is psychological therapy utilising both an audio and video connection (via a video call) which enables face-to-face, confidential and easy to access evidence-based therapy, utilising the latest, purpose-built technology.
- A secure Australian telehealth platform (recommended by the Australian Psychological Society) is used, with “peer-to-peer” connection and end-to-end encryption (directly between you and your psychologist). As the platform is web-based, there is no need to download or install anything (you don’t even need to create an account).
- For your telehealth consultation you will need access to an appropriate device e.g., a laptop, desktop computer, Mac computer, smartphone or tablet with a camera, microphone and speakers, along with a reliable internet connection. All you need is a minimum of 350kbps for both upload and download (average internet speeds in Australia are typically much higher than this anyway). Your home Wi-Fi is typically fine or a good 4G connection.
- Commencing your therapy session is as simple as clicking on your encrypted telehealth link (provided to you via email). You will be brought to a private, virtual waiting room, enabling your psychologist to invite you into a confidential virtual consult room.
- No audio, visual or other content exchanged during your telehealth session is streamed via the platform’s servers (or any other media streaming services that could decrypt the data), or stored by the platform itself.
- The telehealth platform has been designed to comply with Australian privacy and security requirements and its security features are HIPAA compliant (an international standard for regulating a company’s security and privacy framework). The telehealth platform has also achieved ISO 27001 certification, an internationally recognised standard for information security management systems.
- You will receive all the information you need to know, including tips on preparing for appointments, prior to your first appointment (and questions/pre-consultation chats are always very welcome).
Evidence, Effectiveness & Supporting Children
Comprehensive research reviews (meta-analyses) for over a decade, have highlighted the clinical effectiveness of psychological assessments and therapy via telehealth, for children through to adults.
Kerry has a special interest in and knack for working with pre-teens (9-11 years-old) and adolescents (12+ years), and clients of these ages are more often than not, particularly well-suited to engage in therapy via telehealth (and they often prefer it!). For secondary students, these sessions are often easily scheduled around study/free periods throughout the school day, completely eliminating additional travel time concerns for busy families.
For many younger children (8 years-old or less), they are often able to maintain their attention for at least 30 minutes in order to effectively engage in therapy via telehealth.
Children enjoy drawing on the digital whiteboard to express thoughts and feelings, showing off objects in their environment as they build rapport, and many are great at keeping themselves engaged and focused with the use of fidget objects or food snacks for example.
Kerry works closely with parents/carers and family as required, whether in-person (via outreach) or through telehealth/video-link. Aside from participation within client sessions, under the Better Access Initiative, parents/carers or family members are able to access up to 2 Medicare subsidised sessions per year in the absence of the client (and such support sessions count towards the client’s total annual session allocation under the Better Access initiative).
What Happens At The First Appointment?
This initial (typically 90 minute) appointment will help you/your child feel at ease as you get to know Kerry (and maybe even her ‘therapy dogs!’), discuss confidentiality and consent, ask any questions, provide whatever information you’re comfortable providing (you’re in control), and enables Kerry to put together a treatment plan based on (what psychologists call) a clinical formulation.
Along with any referral details, this appointment facilitates Kerry’s understanding of your/your child’s concerns, strengths and priority recommendations.
NB: It’s helpful for a parent/legal guardian to be present with most minors under 16 years of age (and with many clients under 18 years) for approximately half of this initial consultation.
How Many Sessions Are Needed & How Long Will They Be?
The number of sessions that you/your child will undertake is dependent on a range of factors including the presenting concerns (complexity and severity), how motivated, willing and ready you/your child is to engage and make recommended changes, your budget/referred number of sessions, and your agreed upon treatment plan.
The majority of clients schedule regular fortnightly sessions whereas others prefer weekly or monthly; session frequency can change based on therapeutic plans and progress. Subsequent sessions can be booked at the end of each appointment as well as in advance (helping to secure specific appointment days and times for future sessions).
Ultimately, the number and frequency of sessions you schedule is completely up to you!
Sessions typically run for a minimum of 50-60 minutes, although for some, more time might be needed, and initial consultations typically extend for 90 minutes.
Do You Offer In-Person Services?
Yes! While Still I Rise Psychology is predominantly an online boutique clinic, a hybrid model of both telehealth and in-person therapy via mobile outreach (including Walk & Talk Therapy), is offered to South Australian-based (pre-existing) clients if such a supportive, behavioural/exposure-based approach is deemed important in meeting their therapeutic needs.
Personalised, in-person professional support within populated locations such as shops, libraries or parks can be instrumental for clients suffering from concerns such as Anxiety (e.g. Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia and Generalised Anxiety Disorder), Depressive Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders (e.g. Complex Trauma, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or Adjustment Disorder).
NB: Situational factors, including the client’s location within SA are taken into consideration and outreach is currently provided to the Eastern, North-Eastern and Northern suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia.
Following evidence-based therapy via telehealth, Kerry offers invaluable support to clients during outings where they may not typically feel comfortable. This flexible approach to Clinical Psychology sessions (solely via telehealth or through a combination of both telehealth and Walk & Talk Therapy), is utilised as a means of facilitating life-changing behavioural changes and targeting concerns which can be resistant to change from the couch of a therapy room.
